Everyone's a Coach Now. Does It Bother Me?

0:00Everybody's a coach now. >> Yeah, how do you feel about that? >> That everyone's a coach or about >> like you inspired and people like you have inspired so many people to do this, but there's a lot of really bad teachers out there now. >> Yeah. >> Does that make it exciting for you cuz you're like, yes, less competition. >> No, no, I I certainly I certainly do not think that way. Um I think that people attribute far more to malice than to incompetence. Which is that like they let's say you have a bad first grade math teacher, you're not like this person is evil. They're just not that good at teaching. And how do you get good at teaching? You practice teaching and unfortunately some people get practiced on and they're not that good, right? Um And so also there's an unfortunate bias for students for some reason in the alternative world of education if you're trying to learn how to pickle fruit versus trying to learn algebra that when you learn arithmetic from your first math teacher, once you learn algebra, people aren't like, screw my arithmetic teacher, algebra's really where the the real stuff happens. When people move to 101 to 201, all of a sudden they forsake their first teacher which I find interesting. I don't know what it is, but I've just noticed that as a trend.

1:03Um But in terms of why why are there people I One, there's for sure an underbelly to anything. Like there are people who try to make a quick buck and I would say by and large if all of my content in aggregate could be taken as like, it is not quick and it is not pain free. It is risky, it is painful, it will take longer than you thought and it will suck. >> [laughter] >> Um But um my my my middle lesson for all of this stuff has always just been proof first.

1:31Like the proof is the pudding, right? It's not even in the pudding, it is the pudding. Like if you are the number one uh skateboarder in the world plenty of people would love to learn how to do an ollie from you. And so start with the proof and then everything else comes. >> Yeah. >> And so the reason that I think my brand grew disproportionately from other people who could argue arguably talk about business um is that I had proof first, right? So like we had a you know, $46 million exit. Um And we had a relatively large relatively not Apple, but like relatively large business compared to by percentage uh than most people. And so, that gave us

2:04>> by the way. >> enough They gave us enough um credibility to say like, "Listen, I I can't get you to a billion cuz I haven't been there yet. Um but I know how to get to 100. I've done it three times. So, I'm like pretty confident." Um And so, I can just That's where my That's where my confidence ends for now. And I feel like we're on the path to getting to a billion and beyond. Um But yeah, I just talk about what I know.
