Why Most People Underestimate the Time to Success

He argues people underestimate how long success takes because consistency can't be observed in a short clip, only lived day to day. In-person work with him and Leila speeds up behavior change since proximity shows the unglamorous middle that photos skip.

0:00Why do you think human beings systematically underappreciate how long it takes for them to be successful? >> I think it's because time is actually really difficult to observe. So, if you think about like >> [snorts] >> um I've been thinking about this a lot with regards to like why is it that when people come in person and work with Leila and I the the speed of behavior change is so rapid and they're a they're able to assimilate traits very quickly from us whereas remotely it's more difficult

0:27>> and I think it's like like for example consistency is something that's incredibly important for most human endeavors but you can't witness consistency unless you're with someone consistently right like if you see someone practic like you can't do a montage of consistency. You can't really experience it um in 10 seconds. It actually has to like you have to experience consistency with time. And I think that's why it's so hard because the parts where people take pictures are the beginning and the end, but the middle is where the race is won and that's on your own. And I think that's why it's so hard for people to transfer, like for that skill to transfer, which is why sometimes it's like, you know, I learned this from my dad. I just saw him every single day just going in because like that kind of proximity is I think the only thing that gives you kind of a window into the reality. Real quick, if you're a business owner and you are not growing as fast as you'd like, I'd like to give you a free gift. So my team and I put together the $100 million scaling road map, which is basically 200 hours of us looking over all the portfolio companies we've had and what stages of growth they went through and more importantly where they got stuck and how they got past it.

1:27And so we broke it into these 10 stages and we made this little kind of quiz thing where if you put in your business information, it'll tell you where you're at and the most important part for you, what to do for each of functions of the business across product, marketing, sales, customer success, recruiting, IT, human resources, and finance. And so no matter what you're struggling with, someone else has already struggled with it and solved it. And so I'd like to give you this thing absolutely free. You can go to acquisition.com/roadmap, plug in your business information, and if you want us to actually help you deconstrain the business and you're trying to scale, we'd love to help you out on the thank you page. You can just book a call with my team and we will look at the business, see if we can help, and if we can, we'll invite you out to Vegas and we'll do this in person live.
