Key takeaways
- Hey Alex, I inherited my dad's weapons manufacturing company, got kidnapped by a terrorist group, had a literal change of heart, long story, and came back wanting to pivot the entire business away from weapons against my board's wishes while wearing a metal suit to work most days.
- I mean, I guess the question is why do we need to kill the proven thing?
- But if this is a business that you inherited from your father, um then I'm going to guess that you didn't build this business based on what you just said, which means you probably don't have the knack right off the bat for knowing exactly how the market is cuz you weren't the one who built it.
- And so to say that you know better than the board who's probably been there for a long time, like of course there's the situation where like the board's out of touch, blah blah blah blah blah, but like you also have to show some respect to the amount of reps and experience and time that they have spent while you were just a child building this business.

0:00Hey Alex, I inherited my dad's weapons manufacturing company, got kidnapped by a terrorist group, had a literal change of heart, long story, and came back wanting to pivot the entire business away from weapons against my board's wishes while wearing a metal suit to work most days. How do you convince stakeholders to let you kill your most profitable product line for something unproven?
0:28What? Does anyone else think that was absolutely insane? I mean, I guess the question is why do we need to kill the proven thing? Can't we just take profits and then reinvest it in the new thing and then try it out? Like just because something is inferior doesn't mean that it's not productive. Far more often people kill good businesses because they get bored and have a shiny object idea that they think is better. But if this is a business that you inherited from your father, um then I'm going to guess that you didn't build this business based on what you just said, which means you probably don't have the knack right off the bat for knowing exactly how the market is cuz you weren't the one who built it. Let's be real for a second.
1:04Like you didn't build this thing. And so to say that you know better than the board who's probably been there for a long time, like of course there's the situation where like the board's out of touch, blah blah blah blah blah, but like you also have to show some respect to the amount of reps and experience and time that they have spent while you were just a child building this business. Um and so I think that what you need to do is just like give them evidence and then make a an appropriate size bet. And if they don't believe you at all, then you can start your own company and do it your way.
1:33That is probably the most absurd question that I've ever gotten. >> It was what? Iron Man? >> What is it? Jesus Christ? I was like I was like that is the most absurd that is like the most absurd thing I've ever um the [ __ ] I actually got to find out what you think about movie plots as as as as Q&A questions like that. That was insane. Am I Yeah, I'm the only one. Yeah, I missed that one. Just like the See I'm [ __ ] taking these questions seriously, all right? I'm trying to actually answer these and I'm getting [ __ ] trolled.
