Guilt means you broke your own rules, shame means you broke someone else's, and both are described as useful only if they push you to change your behavior. Feeling bad without changing anything, it's argued, serves no purpose.

As long as they get you to change your behavior for the better. Those two emotions which come as the result of breaking your own rules or breaking other people's rules are effective for changing behavior if you let them help you change your behavior for the better.
