If you wanted someone who's going to come out the other side with patience, then you probably wouldn't give them things immediately. If you wanted somebody to come out hard on one side, they probably wouldn't go through a soft life where everything was given to them. If you wanted someone to have grit, then you probably have to have them fail over and over and over again before they would succeed. It's like we want these character traits, but we're not willing to pay the price associated with getting them.
