If you have a friend who keeps telling the same stories over and over, here’s what I recommend

0:00Do you ever have a friend who keeps telling the same stories over and over and over again? Well, this is what you should do next time they do it. One of my partners in the early days of my gym business said to me when we were on a long drive together and he was much older than me. He said, "You know, one of the things I really appreciate about you is he said is you let me tell the same story again and you act like you haven't heard it before." And when he told me that that it was such a deep appreciation. He's like, "You know, I just tell the story cuz I like telling it and I like the ending and I like the funny parts." He's like, "But you never make me feel like I'm repeating myself and that you make me feel like I'm saying it for the first time every time." And he's like, "And I just always wanted to let you know that I appreciated that about you." And I thought that for myself and I was like, "I'm going to always do that now."

0:34Because think about it on the other side, if you're the person who's telling a story and someone's like, "Yeah, you already told me that." You feel incredibly diminished and you're like, "Oh, I guess I won't share that again. Sorry." And so there's no way to play it besides just letting someone tell the story. At the end of the day, if you want to serve somebody else, sometimes just letting them do that is one of the best ways of loving them as a friend.
