0:00Have you ever heard of the concept of skill stacking where it's like all right, I'm never going to be in the top 1% but I can be in the top 5% in five different areas that overlap. What do you think about that? I'm a paid a hardcore advocate. So my number my number one YouTube video of all time is that topic. >> interesting. [laughter] I I I got that from uh Scott Adams but it makes sense that you also had that. I probably also watched it during my binge and uh planted it in my notes.
0:25>> it's so important because what happens is this is kind of like we were saying earlier where the more skills you have the more opportunities you can see. And so that's where these disparate skills can connect and then you can see kind of through lines where no one else can see them because if you only know how to do one thing it's it's very limited in terms of number of things you can do. But if you're very good at, you know, math in the beginning and then it turns into, okay, well, I'm good I learned how to bookkeeping and then I learned how to do accounting and then you learn how to do insurance and you learn how to do tax and then you learn how to do M&A. All of a sudden that stack together becomes unbelievably valuable. And so but if you just learn and this is where I think it gets interesting is that you want to learn skills that are complimentary. Um now in retrospect, you know, Steve Jobs is like, okay, well, I learned calligraphy and it turned into the fonts, you know, for for Mac. I would say, you know, the secondary question is would Mac not have been successful if it didn't have fonts?
1:10>> I was just going to say I don't think the the iPhone is a result of him knowing what sans serif means. Yeah. >> but what people don't know is that he studied he was super into computers and super into hardware from the time he was a child. And so um learning skills now if he learned more about supply chain, that would probably be beneficial for that business, right? And so learning those uh you know, now there are some generalizable skills that will apply to just about any business because there's the core product and you want to learn as much as you can about whatever that core skill or core thing that you're building is.
1:36But then there's all the things that will always be true for every business. And so this is kind of what I would consider the difference between learning the the game of business versus the product itself which is probably if anything you feel across all the different businesses that exist, the product's really the only differentiator. The rest of it's the same. You're going to have marketing or sales. You're going to have like you're going to have HR. You're going to have legal. You're going to have finance. You're going to have all these functions are there. And so you can guarantee that you have to learn all those things if you want to get in the game, right? Now, which one do you start with? You're not going to start with finance cuz you have no money to count. Yeah, good point. >> Right. So, it's like we have to start these things in sequence. And so, typically it's going to be um either you decide to learn the business from the outside in or you learn from the inside out. So, what that means is like, okay, I have to learn how to promote. I have to let people know about stuff. I have to learn how to get them to give me money. So, I have to learn to sell.
2:15Um and that's kind of like if you just know these two things, if you literally only know how to promote and learn how to sell, you will be able to feed yourself for the rest of your life. If you just know these two things. Now, from the product side it's like, okay, well, I can build this thing and then I'll have to learn how to market and sell it. You can You can go either direction. Um but at the end of the day, you will have to do all those three things um at a large enough level uh sorry, at a deep enough level in order to get that first dollar across. And that's like those are the the core deficiencies that that people are getting into business struggle from.
2:45Real quick, if you are a business owner and you are not growing as fast as you'd like, I'd like to give you a free gift. So, my team and I put together the $100 million scaling roadmap, which is basically 200 hours of us looking over all the portfolio companies we've had and what stages of growth they went through and more importantly where they got stuck and how they got past it. And so, we broke it into these 10 stages and we made this little kind of quiz thing where if you put in your business information, it'll tell you where you're at and the most important part for you, what to do for each of functions of the business across product, marketing, sales, customer success, recruiting, IT, human resources and finance. And so, no matter what you're struggling with, someone else has already struggled with it and solved it. And so, I'd like to give you this thing absolutely free. Go to acquisition.com/roadmap, plug in your business information and if you want us to actually help you deconstruct the business and you're trying to scale, we'd love to help you out. On the thank you page, you just book a call with my team and we will look at the business, see if we can help and if we can, we'll invite you out to Vegas and we'll do this in person live.
