You Feel Guilty About Lying, Not Money

0:00Jake, do you ever battle with the morality of making money? It's something I myself battle with. I know I work for it, but something feels off. Um honestly, zero. I have never had any morality issue with making money. Now, what you can take issue with is how you make the money. And I think everything there comes down at the most basic level, this is my the 80/20 of making money morality is that it's about not misrepresenting. It's about not deceiving, which is why the first rule of ACU marketing state the facts and tell the truth. And so, um if you feel off about it, it's typically because you're misrepresenting something in some way. Meaning you're promising too hard or you're pretending like you've done something that you haven't in order to gain authority. There's a hundred small ways that you can lie um that will make you feel bad about it.

0:44And so, I would encourage you to figure out what narrative would be the most compelling narrative and then make that narrative true and then tell that story. And I would say like that process that I just outlined is very much how I've lived my life. It's like what story do I want to tell and then reversing that story into reality. Real. But in terms of morality, no, I don't have any issue with like money is just it's just it's an IOU from society for future goods and services. It means you did something, you created a surplus for someone else, and then we have a universal IOU that they give you that you can then trade. Like what is inherently bad about that?

1:19It was an exchange. It was voluntary. You didn't force them. And this is again, voluntary exchange is the key part of capitalism, which is why, you know, society gets better. But part of voluntary exchange is that you have to have um you want to have no deception, which is why there's laws around this. And so, if you say, "Hey, I will mow your lawn uh to this level of quality uh every day of the week or whatever, you know, every once a once a month." And the other person says, "Sure." And then you get money and then you mow the lawn, what wrong occurred here? Right?

1:51I don't know. And so, I think at the basic level like some deception occurred and that's why you feel bad, not because inherently making money is bad.
