You need to be thinking bigger

Alex argues it's easier to make a million dollars than a hundred thousand, because bigger goals force you to use different tools instead of just trading more time. He compares it to running versus driving five blocks, at some point you can't run any faster, so you need a different approach.

0:00It's easier to make a million dollars than it is to make a hundred thousand dollars, and let me explain. If I told you to go down the block, you would go at a certain speed. If I said, "Go as fast as you possibly can." At some point, you'd run, and then you'd improve your form, and you'd get better footwear, and then you'd change your clothes, but at some point, you wouldn't be able to run any harder or any faster to get there. But if I said, "I need you to go five blocks." You may be like, "Huh? Okay."

0:26Now, some people will then try to walk or run that. But the smart cookie then says, "Huh? I could take a car, and I would go a hell of a lot faster. And if I'm speeding in my car, I'll probably get to the fifth block before the other guy gets the end of the first block." And so, the magic of thinking bigger is that you change your solution set. Meaning, you use different tools to accomplish the objective. The reason a hundred thousand dollars per year is the hardest amount of money to make is because it assumes for most people that they will trade their time in terms of hourly wages or salary in traditional work in order to get it. And so, they have to spend all of their time in order to make the hundred thousand dollars.

1:09But if I said, "Make a million or even ten million before the world explodes." You would know that you would have to use a different way of solving that problem. And so, the reason it's easier to make a million dollars or ten million dollars is because you can do it in less time with more skill. If you start solving for the skills required to make a million or ten million dollars. Real quick, if you are business owner and you are not growing as fast as you'd like, I'd like to give you a free gift. So, my team and I put together the hundred million dollar scaling road map, which is basically two hundred hours of us looking over all the portfolio companies we've had, and what stages of growth they went through, and more importantly, where they got stuck, and how they got past it. And so, we broke it in these ten stages, and we made this little kind of quiz thing where if you put in your business information, it'll tell you where you're at and the most important part for you, what to do for each of functions of the business across product, marketing, sales, customer success, recruiting, IT, human resources, and finance. And so, no matter what you're struggling with, someone else has already struggled with it and solved it. And so, I'd like to give you this thing absolutely free. You can go to acquisition.com/roadmap, plug in your business information, and if you want us to actually help you deconstruct the business and you're trying to scale, we'd love to help you out. On the thank you page, you can just book a call with my team and we will look at the business, see if we can help, and if we can, we'll invite you out to Vegas and we'll do this in person live.
