You’re Thinking About Marketing All Wrong

Alex says most marketing failures come from mismatched expectations, like assuming a few posts a week will grow a business, plus overcomplicating strategy. He uses the midwit meme to argue the simple answer is the right one: tell people what you have and make sure it's clearly for them.

Key takeaways

  • Like if you aren't doing enough or you can't stick with a marketing channel long enough or you think that you doing 10 outreaches a week is is sufficient or you making you know five pieces of content a week is somehow going to like grow the business.
  • It's like, how many seconds should my ad be?
  • And at what point should I drop this color?
  • I would say nine times out of 10 when we look at a portfolio sales script, if it's underperforming, we remove stuff.

It's like you just have a wildly mismatched expectation against reality. And then and then there's a whole another group of people who you have to be specific. You have to be clear. And a lot of sometimes this happens in a little bit of more marketing centric entrepreneurs. They think there's so much magic in it. And I feel like some of you guys might have seen this before, but one of my favorite memes of all time, which looks like this, and you've kind of got like uh you know, like an idiot over here.

0:42Uh, and then you've got like a, you know, smart person here. Uh, maybe I'll put some glasses on him, right? And then you've got like the midwit. And so what happens is you just want to make sure that you're not this guy because usually this guy and this guy agree. And then this is the one that gets everyone confused. It's like, how many seconds should my ad be? And at what point should I drop this color? I think it's because the buttons changed and vibrated. And this guy's like, "I think you just got to tell people what you have and make sure they understand that it's for them." And this guy's like, "Just tell them what you have and make sure that they understand it's for them." Right? So, you end up going through this whole cycle just to end up with like just be clear, get to the point. And so many times I've seen this happen, but deletion will often beat explanation. I would say nine times out of 10 when we look at a portfolio sales script, if it's underperforming, we remove stuff. We cut stuff. We just make it shorter. And believe it or not, when you make it shorter, you can be very clear about what point we're trying to actually make. And if you don't know what the point of the sales script is, that's the problem. And if you don't know the point of the ad, that's also the …
